The hunger crisis in Africa's Sahel region threatens to worsen, according to the United Nations. Nearly six million people in the countries of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal do not have enough to eat, the head of the UN Office for Emergency Relief (Ocha), Mark Lowcock, announced on Tuesday. According to the report, 1.6 million children are suffering from severe malnutrition. The situation is as serious as it was last in 2012, he said.

"Food supplies for millions of people are already empty. Families are cutting back on food, taking their children out of school and foregoing basic health care in order to have money for food," Lowcock said.

Acute malnutrition has increased by 50 per cent in the six countries compared to last year, he said, with one in six children needing treatment.
